Socks and Sandals, Oh My! Tasteless or trendy?
I've decided to take a break from my WIP to comment on a topic that can no longer be ignored...
If it's cold enough for socks, it's too cold for sandals. If it's warm enough for sandals, it's too flippin' warm for socks. It seems practical, right? Alas, my friends, practicality is underappreciated these days.
During the summer, the inevitability of seeing socks and sandals in the wild increases tenfold. The natural habitat of socks and sandals typically consists of campgrounds, gas stations, and some of these endangered fashion species can even be spotted in your very own neighborhood while mowing the lawn. But thanks (or no thanks) to some fashion "trendsetters", this wild, contradictory fashion species is being torn from its natural habitat, tamed, and displayed on the runway as a 2010 fashion trend. Yes... I said runway. If you don't believe me, check out this ARTICLE or THIS ONE. What in the name of holey socks is going on, you ask? Join the confused club.
What are your thoughts? Are socks and sandals a cool new trend or a tacky fashion flop? If you're with me or against me on the anti-socks/sandals front, I beg you to voice your opinion below. Important issues like this should be discussed.
And if you can't get enough of the socks and sandals extravaganza, you'll go gaga over this SOCKERIFIC SITE.

If you are wearing socks and flip flops because you're feet are cold then you are not drinking enough booze.
I'll wear socks with sandals that don't have the strip between the toes. But to actually push the sock between your toes seems uncomfortable. Either way you look like a geek!
Travis -- Haha! Good point...
Aubrie -- Some socks and sandals aren't that bad... but socks & flip flops should be illegal. lol.
Oh my gosh, this is horrible! The Sockerific site cracked me up. The "mandals" with dark socks remind me of my father in law. Like legwarmers, there are some things that should never be in style.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I think it would be awesome to meet you in person next summer. Imagine, you'll be out there with a published book under your belt! That's so cool.
Hilarious! I shall ever associate Tevas and socks with a college prof of mine, but I admit I've been known to include wool socks with my Chacos... as long as I'm NOT wearing shorts! And camping. :o)
So I'm in the club or out? I'm confused too!
I'm a member of the confused club, on this one. And another thing: what's going on with teenage boys, decked out in full Abercrombie regalia, but wearing black shin-high socks with their Bermuda-length shorts?? Are they taking fashion tips from their grandfathers?
:D Fun post!!
whoa, that is one hilarious photo! That is the trend lately, but I don't think those poor sods who wore their jeans too tight in the 80's knew how they looked either!
Socks + Sandals = 0 (they don't add up).
:)
It's horribly tacky! In fact, in my second book that I just wrote, this actually came into play! but the sock and sandal wearing kid was a foreign exchange student from Germany--and over there you can actually see more of this trend. I'm an exclusive flip-flopper, year round. And I would never do it with socks. Not even in winter.
Ah! How can people walk with their socks like that, all scrunched from their flip-flops?
Personally, I'm not a fan of socks & sandals. If it's cold enough that I need to wear socks, then I put on tennis shoes.
But, hey, it's whatever makes a person comfortable. If someone likes rocking the socks n' sandals look, then more power to them :)
Julie - Haha - Isn't that sockerific site awesome? I'm so happy I found it. If I ever need to cheer up, I can just log on and look at some socks & mandals. :)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll both be @ SCBWI LA next year!
Jackee -- You're definitely in the club. It sounds like you have a good handle on your socks & sandals exposure. Adding shorts into the equation puts people on a whole different level. lol.
Nicole -- Haha! I haven't had the pleasure of seeing this Abercrombie/black shin-high socks trend. Good lord, that sounds atrocious! lol. Whatever floats their boats, though.
Terry - Good point! I totally agree with you on the saran wrap jeans! :)
DL -- Now that's math I can understand. :)
Roberto -- Thanks, I'll have to check it out.
Rose - Ha! I love the sound of your character! What a defining fashion trait you gave him! And I agree, flip flops are fabulous, sans socks.
Lea -- Such a fantastic point! If someone feels good in flip flops and socks, they should sport them like a rock star. I'll cheer them on for their uniqueness. Just don't expect me to get in on that fashion trend any time soon. :)
hi amy!
i'm a new member of KAC, and i was looking at everyone's blogs and just saw this! Hilarious! And so random, because I just wrote an article for writeoncon.com, and one of the first few lines was something like, "if you think rhyme is easy, you're as wrong as socks with sandals"! my fear was that no one would know what on earth i was talking about, but now i realize we all TOTALLY know! yay!!!
