Translating Copyediting Symbols

Yesterday I received a very special delivery - my copyedits for THE LIPSTICK LAWS! Being a first time author, I didn't know what to expect during the copyediting stage of the editorial process.

As I started reviewing my copyedits, I felt many emotions at once:

1) Happiness that my book is getting closer and closer to publication...

2) Excitement to review the copyeditor's suggestions...

3) Fascination by the crazy foreign language otherwise known as copyediting marks...

4) Frustration from the headache induced by trying to figure out the crazy foreign language otherwise known as copyediting marks....

5) Relief once I found translation links...

And then I thought to myself... hmmmm... I can't be the only person in the world who's been confused over a few copyediting symbols. So, I figured the least I could do as I'm reviewing my own copyedits is provide some helpful copyediting translation links that I discovered online. Just in case anyone else is trying to avoid going cross-eyed while figuring out what all the symbols stand for.

*Disclaimer - Not all copyediting marks cause crossed eyes... Nor will they reverse a permanent case of crossed eyes.*

2011 Debut Author Groups

For those who have found this blog through my page on The Elevensies site... or by the 2k11 plug on The Class of 2k10 website, you're going to be a skip, leap and sideways somersault beyond this post.

However, for those of you who are debut authors or fellow book lovers who've stumbled on my blog out of the blue, or if you're making an entrance via the link on my new "coming soon" page at www.amyholder.com... or if you're that creepy cyber-stalker guy in the tight plaid shirt and adult underoos, this post is for you! Er - on second thought, creepy cyber-stalker guy, you can just go ahead and ignore this post... and all the others.

Moving on...

I'm proud to be a member of two fantastic debut author groups called the Class of 2k11 and The Elevensies. Both groups are filled with awesome MG and YA authors debuting in (drum roll)... you guessed it... 2011! While the Class of 2k11 doesn't have a public website yet, you can check out the fab group of 2k10'ers debuting this year at: www.classof2k10.com . If you happen to be a young adult or middle grade author debuting in 2011 and you'd like to join the Class of 2k11 club, I'd love to hear from you, so send me an email.

While you're breathing in all the debut author awesomeness, please check out The Elevensies and all the fun and inspiring Tennerviews going on right now at: http://community.livejournal.com/2011debuts/

Enjoy!

Resolutions...

Let's face it... the statistics of people actually following through with their New Year's resolutions aren't very promising. So I've decided to make myself 10 resolutions with the thought that I'll higher my odds of accomplishment.

10 New Year's Resolutions for 2010:

1) Finish and sell my work in progress.

2) Lose the 97 pounds I gained over the holiday season... Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit, it was only 73 pounds... but boy, it FEELS like 97!

3) Become an expert at the mysterious art of self-promotion... or hypnotism... which could definitely help with self-promotion.

4) Run a marathon... or at least WATCH the people on the Biggest Loser attempt to run a marathon.

5) Limit my reality show addiction to less dangerous shows such as Survivor, The Bachelor, and American Idol. Admit myself into reality rehab if my addiction moves on to hard core, hazardous shows such as fist pumping Jersey Shore or pretty much anything on VH1.

6) Be more organized and better at multi-tasking.

7) Grow a third arm to help accomplish #6.

8) Or find a way to clone myself to accomplish #6... Mini me - you complete me!

9) Find an agent who's happy to represent me, my third arm, and my clone....

10) Relish every second of my publishing dream coming true!
